How long does an oil change take?

It may be easy to ignore the "check engine" light on your dashboard, but it is important to get your oil changed as soon as possible. An overdue oil change can lead to many more internal issues with your vehicle that are far more serious and invasive to repair.

Routine oil changes are one of the most common car procedures, but they can be a hassle to get done. Busy auto-shops can leave you waiting, inconveniently out of a vehicle, along with the risk of being overcharged for a simple procedure. To make sure this does not happen, we're here to tell you all about how long a routine oil change takes, and the essential information to understanding the process.

What is an oil change?

An oil change is a process that involves changing the oil in your car. The purpose of an oil change is to ensure that the engine in your car operates at maximum efficiency and doesn't wear or tear.

Oil is a lubricant that helps reduce friction and wear on moving parts inside your car's engine by providing a thin film between parts that rub together as they move back and forth. This lubrication also reduces heat generated by friction, which prevents further wear of moving parts due to overheating.

In addition to acting as a lubricant (and coolant for engines), oil acts as a filter for contaminants like water and metal shavings from internal combustion engines; this keeps them from getting past filters within your vehicle's engine, causing damage when introduced into critical components such as pistons or cylinders where they can cause serious damage over time.

During an oil change, your car's engine is drained of old, dirty oil and replaced with new, fresh motor oil. This important maintenance procedure helps keep your engine running smoothly and prevents costly repairs down the road.

How long does the actual process take?

Changing your oil is a very simple process. A professional mechanic can get the process done in 20-45 minutes. With Curbee, the oil change process is as simple as ever. The price of an oil change depends on what type of oil you use - synthetic or conventional oil. Synthetic oil is higher quality and lasts longer than conventional oil, so it is more expensive - ranging from around $75 to $125. Conventional oil changes are often between $20 and $60. The majority of time spent when changing an engine oil filter is waiting for the dirty oil to drain out into the pan. If you have an automatic transmission or one with a manual valve body (a valve that regulates flow), then this can take longer as more pressure is required to get the old stuff out of your engine. While waiting for the old oil to drain, many mechanics will check on other essential aspects of your vehicle. However, this does not include the time it takes to drop off your vehicle, wait for a mechanic to service your vehicle, and pick up your vehicle. These other factors can often prolong the process, making getting your oil changed that more unappealing.

Curbee’s mobile mechanics come to you, making the process of getting an oil change quick and easy! When your oil change light comes on for the first time, book an oil change with Curbee and avoid all the hassle of wait-times.

When should I get my next oil change?

That depends on how often you drive and what kind of vehicle you own. Most manufacturers recommend changing your vehicle's motor oil at least once every 6 months or 3,000 miles (whichever comes first) if you drive under average conditions. Your Curbee technician can help determine what kind of schedule works best for your needs!
